Dear Members,

:candle: Abhidhamma View : The Seven Kinds of Initiate :candle:
[Presented by Dr.Tep Sastri @ sariputtadhamma/JTN]

The Seven Kinds of Initiate

The seven initiates (trainers: sekha) are noble disciples: 1) the faith-devotee, 2) the faith-liberated one, 3) the body-witness , 4) the both-ways-liberated one, 5) the Dhamma-devotee, 6) the vision-attainer, 7) the wisdom-liberated one.

References:

1) [Visuddhimagga, XXI, 73:] "He who is filled with resolution (adhimokkha) and, in considering the formations as impermanent (anicca), gains the faculty of faith, he, at the moment of the path to Stream-winning is called a faith-devotee (saddhaanusaarii); (2) at the seven higher stages he is called a faith-liberated one (saddhaavimutta). (3) He who is filled with tranquillity and, in considering the formations as miserable (dukkha), gains the faculty of concentration, he in every respect is considered as a body-witness (kaaya-sakkhii). (4) He, however, who after reaching the absorptions of the immaterial sphere has attained the highest fruition (of Holiness), he is a both-ways-liberated one (ubhato-bhaaga-vimutta). (5) He who is filled with wisdom and, in considering the formations as not-self (anattaa), gains the faculty of wisdom, he is at the moment of Stream-winning a Dhamma-devotee (dhammaanusaarii), (6) at the later stages a vision-attainer (ditthippatta), (7) at the highest stage a wisdom-liberated one (paññaa-vimutta)."

2) [SN 25.7 Cetana Sutta:] At Savatthi. "Monks, intention for forms is inconstant, changeable, alterable. Intention for sounds... Intention for smells... Intention for tastes... Intention for tactile sensations... Intention for ideas (dhammas) is inconstant, changeable, alterable. One who has conviction & belief that these phenomena are this way is called a faith-follower [saddhaanusaarii]: one who has entered the orderliness of rightness, entered the plane of people of integrity, transcended the plane of the run-of-the-mill. He is incapable of doing any deed by which he might be reborn in hell, in the animal womb, or in the realm of hungry shades. He is incapable of passing away until he has realized the fruit of stream-entry.

"One who, after pondering with a modicum of discernment, has accepted that these phenomena are this way is called a Dhamma-follower(dhammaanusaarii): one who has entered the orderliness of rightness, entered the plane of people of integrity, transcended the plane of the run-of-the-mill. He is incapable of doing any deed by which he might be reborn in hell, in the animal womb, or in the realm of hungry shades. He is incapable of passing away until he has realized the fruit of stream-entry.

"One who knows and sees that these phenomena are this way is called a stream-enterer [sotaapanna], steadfast, never again destined for states of woe, headed for self-awakening."

There are nine other dhammas besides Cetana that also lead to same attainments. They are Cakkhu, Ruupa, Viññaa.na, Phassa, Vedaana, Saññaa, Ta.nhaa, Dhaatu, Khandha. [See SN 25.1 - Sn 25.10] http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .html#sn25" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
