Reference Question

Postby sleeven » Sun Feb 09, 2014 12:53 am

Hi. Just working my way through the Visuddhimagga and I am encountering a bunch of references to 'the seven this and that' and the 'the five these and that' and 'the three those and them'. Can anyone recommend a good reference that includes all of these lists along with brief explanations? Ideally a published book.

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. I'm a newb.

Venerable Silananda has done a pretty good walkthrough of the Visuddhimagga which might help you through some rough patches.

"Bhikkhus, possessing five factors, speech is well spoken, not badly spoken; it is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise. What five? It is spoken at the proper time; what is said is true; it is spoken gently; what is said is beneficial; it is spoken with a mind of loving-kindness. Possessing these five factors, speech is well spoken, not badly spoken; it is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise."
