How enlightened are you?

Postby Phra Chuntawongso » Sun May 02, 2010 12:52 pm

I found this in the bangkok post.
How enlightened are you?
If you can live without caffeine
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains
If you can resist complaining
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment
If you can ignore a friends limited education and never correct him or her
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend
If you can face the world without lies and deceit
If you can conquer tension without medical help
If you can relax without liqour
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs
If you can honestly say that deep in your heart, you have no prejudice against creed, colour, religion, gender preference,or politics, then you have almost reached the same level of spiritual development as your dog.
And crawling on the planets face, some insects called the human race.
Lost in time
Lost in space
And meaning

Oh man, thats beautiful
We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to
the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his
children smart.

A vipassana group here in San Antonio I sometimes attend, called the Yellow Dog Sangha, is named after the founding members yellow lab who would always come to lay an "meditate" with everyone during group meditation. She was a very dilligent meditator and had a better sitting posture than some of the members and wouldn't move at all until the time was up

Through many of samsara’s births I hasten seeking, finding not the builder of this house - pain is birth again, again.

O builder of this house you’re seen, you shall not build a house again, all your beams have given away, rafters of the ridge decayed, mind to the unconditioned gone, exhaustion of craving has it reached.

I suppose our bitch doesn't quite live up to such high spiritual standards, since she was howling like a wolf over a cut on her paw.

Also, the lady dog complaineth a lot, if I interpret her barking correctly. If I could only speak Doggish.

Cheers, Thomas

I would say that rather depends on the dog. My first dog was very mean, it is easily anger and even attack us. We took care of it with the best of love but it didn't seem to care about anyone except for himself. There was an attack incident that the police was call in. And they had to put it to sleep for our safety. Our next dog was a total sweetheart. So even dogs have variety of personalities just as humans.

Sentimental anthropomorphic claptrap. Just the sort of stuff to ensure that Buddhadhamma is forever associated with hippy losers.

What is the use of his knowledge
pertaining to the number of insects in the whole world?
Rather, inquire into his knowledge of
that which is to be practised by us
