All of those words exist only in commentaries. Anyone know synonyms for hadayavatthu (the only rūpa from 28 rūpa that never been mentioned in abhidhamma) ?

hadaya = heart

hadayavatthu = the substance of the heart

Maybe it is because it is only in later years that the heart became associated with compassion, figuratively?

The notion of the heart as the base for consciousness pre-dates the Buddha.

found this in the Dhammapada commentary:

"Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others; thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed."

well, it seems hadayavatthu term only exists on commentaries, the best i could find is on milinda panha.

You could be right. Hadaya (heart) is apparently used often in the Canon:

We read of someone's 'heart breaking with sorrow’ (Ja.V,180), of having a 'calm heart' (A.V,64), a 'distraught heart’ (Ja.IV,415) and of 'knowing another person's heart' (M.I,32). The Buddha said that his words 'go right to the heart' (hadayaṃ gamā). But apparently no use of hadayavatthu, that I can see, except perhaps in the Abhidhamma?

Hadaya-vatthu: 'heart as physical base' of mental life. The heart, according to the commentaries as well as to the general Buddhist tradition, forms the physical base vatthu of consciousness In the canonical texts, however, even in the Abhidhamma Pitaka, no such base is ever localized, a fact which seems to have first been discovered by Shwe Zan Aung Compendium of Philosophy, pp. 277ff.. In the Patth. we find repeatedly only the passage:;That material thing based on which mind-element and mind-consciousness element function; yam rūpam nissāya manodhātu ca mano-viññāna-dhātu ca vattanti, tam rūpam.

Ah, I see. So even on Abhidhamma, hadayavatthu is called indirectly.
