Hi Ayya,
I contacted venerable over a year ago, and from using his edited pali, to try to translate myself a sutta it looks like he is quite accurate, obviously I am no expert, and the dictionary I am using isn't necessarily going to be the same as his or one he used, but there are enough similarities or alternative words with similar or same meaning to indicate to me that his translation is at the very least, very close to the word for word translation, and accurate.
I have also spoken to a monk who knows Ven. from before he (aanandajoti) ordained, who says his academic work is excellent, and someone whos translations and any other work should be looked at.
This offering maybe right, or wrong, but it is one, the other, both, or neither!
