removal, abandonment of desire and lust (MN 13)

Hi,
I am curious about the Pali words in the recurring phrase, "the removal of desire and lust, the abandonment of desire and lust," in MN 13: Mahadukkhakkhandaha Sutta; I 84-90, Bhikkhu Bodhi translation (In the Buddha's Words, pages 193-199). Specifically, what are the Pali words for "removal," "abandonment," "desire" and "lust"?
I believe that covers it.

Hi Dan, this is actually something you can find out for yourself with the right resources. You can find one version of the Pali text at http://studies.worldtipitaka.org/tipitaka/9M/2/2.3. I don't have Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation, so I was looking at http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.013.than.html. Just looking at patterns of repetition and section breaks, the Pali terms that I believe correspond to Thanissaro's "subduing of desire-passion" and "abandoning of desire-passion" (for sensuality, form, etc.) are "chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṃ". Taking a look at an online Pali dictionary at http://dsal.uchicago.edu/dictionaries/pali/, you can find out that "chanda-rāga" is a compound meaning "exciting desire" (under entry "chanda"), "vinaya" means "driving out, abolishing destruction, removal", and "pahāna" means "giving up, leaving, abandoning, rejection". Please check this further for yourself, as I don't personally know any Pali!
