Longuest pali compound word

Postby Sekha » Thu Aug 25, 2011 4:11 am

In the series of silly topics, here is quite a long word:

naccagītavāditavisūkadassanamālāgandhavilepanadhāraṇamaṇḍanavibhūsanaṭṭhānā
Where knowledge ends, religion begins. - B. Disraeli

As a sweet-smelling and beautiful lotus flower may grow upon a heap of rubbish thrown on the highway, so also, out of the rubbish heap of beings may appear a disciple of the Buddha, who with his wisdom, shines resplendent in wisdom. -/ Dhp 58-59

Was this actually in a text?

I'm sure you could artificially cook up some enormous compounds if you wanted to, but those are less fun than "wild" ones.

Either way, I like it.

In the Book of Eights in that link and also in the Threes: http://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php?tit ... %28Pali%29

Unfortunately, I don't have access to my PTS English translation (in boxes right now) so can't look it up by the passage number to see what it means.

I think it is a part of the 7th precept: "dancing, singing, music, watching shows, wearing garlands, beautifying myself with perfumes and cosmetics".

Good job. I didn't notice it, since there are no hyphens in that long word!
