Are these considered right livelihood?

Post by Tom »

I'm thinking about becoming a web developer or computer programmer, however, I'd like to make sure these occupations fall within right livelihood. If anyone can comment on this, I'd very much appreciate it.

Not to be glib, but I can't imagine why these wouldn't be unless they are sites dealing in things illegal. Best of luck to you! :anjali:

Thank you for the information. I do have one more question: In MN 117, it says "And what is wrong livelihood? Scheming, persuading, hinting, belittling, & pursuing gain with gain. This is wrong livelihood...", what exactly is meant by "persuading", "hinting" and "pursuing gain with gain"?

Hi ccharles,

If you examine the context of MN117 this seems to be specifically directed at bhikkhus. The "scheming, persuading, hinting..." is not allowed for a Bhikkhu, who undertakes to live on what is freely offered.

MN 117 wrote:[5] "Of those, right view is the forerunner. And how is right view the forerunner? One discerns wrong livelihood as wrong livelihood, and right livelihood as right livelihood. This is one's right view. And what is wrong livelihood? Scheming, persuading, hinting, belittling, & pursuing gain with gain. This is wrong livelihood.

"And what is right livelihood? Right livelihood, I tell you, is of two sorts: There is right livelihood with effluents, siding with merit, resulting in the acquisitions [of becoming]; and there is noble right livelihood, without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path.

"And what is the right livelihood that has effluents, sides with merit, & results in acquisitions? There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones abandons wrong livelihood and maintains his life with right livelihood. This is the right livelihood that has effluents, sides with merit, & results in acquisitions.

"And what is the right livelihood that is without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path? The abstaining, desisting, abstinence, avoidance of wrong livelihood of one developing the noble path whose mind is noble, whose mind is without effluents, who is fully possessed of the noble path. This is the right livelihood that is without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path.

Can't clearly identify for this question.

The same occupation may have many difference answer at difference environment-- boss, colleague, type of work, food, partner, etc.

You should decide it yourself with comparison with dhamma.

Example determination:

Any occupation that I never have any work need to done by these job:

-http://84000.org/tipitaka/dic/d_item.php?i=321 (have English translated in parenthesis.)

-http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.ph ... 73#p209473
(For clearly by commentary, please focus to my reply in that topic.)

And any occupation I can done these:
-Uposathasīla every weekend.
-http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .nara.html

And any occupation can given back all these:
+http://www.84000.org/tipitaka/dic/d_see ... B5%B6%D0_3
-http://www.84000.org/tipitaka/dic/d_see ... l=on#find3
-http://www.84000.org/tipitaka/dic/d_see ... l=on#find4
-6 benefit must don't intimately obstruct self.

The last choice that I should consider: the best wage of the leave choice(s) from dhamma considered job.

I may choose that job.
