What is right view? What is it's place on the path?

Hi ShanYin,

There are a number of references here:
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/index-su ... #eightfold

This is a good summary:

Here are two suttas that I have found particularly helpful:

The Sammaditthi Sutta
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.009.than.html
and

The "Great Forty"
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.117.than.html

"Right View" is often presented a bit differently according to context, but these two made things clearer for me.

Knowledge about suffering, knowledge about the origin of suffering, knowledge about cessation of suffering, knowledge about the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. This is called right view.

Right view is the first of the 8 path factors:

Right View
Right Intention
Right Speech
Right Action
Right Livelihood
Right Right Effort
Right Mindfulness
Right Concentration

I think as we practice with persistence and diligence, employing the instrutions, we begin to see more and more the wisdom and truth in the teachings first hand, confirmed through direct experience, and our faith and confidence grows.

Dukkha is often translated as suffering, stress, or dissatisfactoriness (sp?).

Right View is one of the eight components of the Noble Eightfold Path. The Noble Eightfold Path is the Fourth Noble Truth, which is the path to the cessation of dukkha. There is an informative page on the Four Noble Truths at accesstoinsight.
