Uppekha is generally classified under Brahma-viharas (divide abidings) but may exists in other lists - I can't recall off the top of my head. David would be the one to ask - he's the list man!

Uppekkha is mentioned in several lists, here are some of the most important:

7 factors of enlightenment
40 meditation subjects (one of the meditation subjects)
37 factors or wings to awakening

Thank you for the information. Do you also have any thoughts, based on your personal experiences and dhamma practice, on how best to cultivate samatha and uppekha, and why they are both so essential?
