This occurs only late texts, not the suttas. Why do you ask?

Because while I've actually heard of it before, I've never seen it in the suttas, so I thought perhaps I missed it somewhere. Hehehe... that clears it up.

I've maybe seen it in the Jatakas or commentarial works... but I don't remember where...

The Twin Miracle was performed on two occasions that I know of: when the Buddha came to Kapilavatthu, he performed it to subdue the pride of his relatives, and he performed it after the incident when Pindola Bhāradvāja performed miracles, and the Vinaya rule was laid down proscribing the performance of miracles by disciples. The accounts are found in the Vinaya.

Buddha's 'miracles' become more and more miraculous, the later the texts.

I was just reading today that while oral transmission doesn equate with loss of material, that it might not stop addition of new material.
