Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knows:

1) Is Ajahn Nyanadhammo still the abbot of Wat Pa Ratanawan?

2) What would I have to do to stay there? Do I need to have permission first?

3) Any other general advice?

Metta,

Guy

I'm reactivating this thread.

I'd like to write Luang Por Nyanadhammo and therefore I need to know where he is currently residing at. Thank you!

Yes, Ajahn Nyanadhammo is the abbot at Wat Pa Ratanawan, Ampher Wang Nam Khiow, Jangwat Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
They might allow a few lay guests to stay there, but the accommodation is quite limited and one should write to them first or just pop in to visit. The abbot usually receives visitors in the Sala in the afternoon (after 2 pm).

And again, thank you Bhante for being so helpful!!! :anjali:

I don't want to travel there, at least not yet. He used to be the abbot at Wat Pah Nanachat when I've practiced the Anagarika Precepts there and right now I want to thank certain teachers that I met in this lifetime and pay my respects by writing them. So it's great to know where this letter has to travel to. :)

Hi. I am going to spend holidays at Wang Nam Khiao, leaving tomorrow, and I would like to take the opportunity to visit Wat Pah Ratanawan.

Anyone knows if this map is correct?

https://maps.google.co.th/maps/ms?ie=UT ... 472067a265

When looking the satellite picture, there seems to be nothing at the Blue spot (I made a search for วัดป่ารัตนวัน)

Thank You

Yes, the map should be correct. The lake at Wat Pah Ratanawan does not appear so clearly but the place must be correct on the map.

Hi,

Me, my sister and niece will be visiting Thailand during this Christmas time (24th to 29th Dec). We are Ajahn Nayanadmmos dmma talk followers. We would like to attend a day or 2 days retreat at the Wat Pa Ratanwan monastery and listen to Ajahns dmma talks. I am from Austalia and my sister and neice are from Sri Lanka. Could anyone please let us know if we can stay in the monastery for a night or 2 during the period that we are in Thailand. If accomoddation is not available within the monastery please help us with other local accommodation nearby and the instructions to get there as we can't speak or understand Thai .

There is no accommodation offered to general visitors at the monastery itself, but many people choose to stay at a nearby monastery of Ajahn Ganha called Wat Sup Tawee instead. Here is some information about these two places and how to get there:

1) The distance from Bangkok to both temples (Wat Pa Ratanawan and Wat Pa Suptawee)
Is approximately 230 kms.(usually about 3 hrs).
2) The distance between two temples 4-5 kms, less than 10 minutes drive and
Walking time is around 1 hr or less depending your pace rate (walking from
Wat Pa Suptawee to Ratanawan through the back road via the edge of National
Park of Khao Yai app.4 kms in Feb. that took almost an hour).

There is a commute van to Wang Nam Khieu from the Victory Monument in Bangkok
and the driver will be able to drop the requested passenger at the main road
between the two temples then you walk either to one of them.
If come in group, one'd better arrange the van or bus from BKK depending how
big of the group, the van is for 10-15 people and 30-40 people for bus, the road
is good and wide enough for big bus.
There is no accommodation for laypeople at Ratanawan but definitely they can
stay at Wat Pa Suptawee of Luang Por Ganha ,providing one makes arrangement
in advance ,especially for the big group. The weekdays usually are quieter than
the weekend and during national holidays when the working people only find time
to come to the temple ,try to get away from their stressful jobs to discover Dhamma,
the meditation and chanting at Luang Por Ganha's temple is from 7-8.30 pm.

To get around the areas which is between the two temples may be possible on
foot which is around 4 kms but you won't be in time to do offering for the monks
alms round from both temples as they come out more or less around 7 o'clock.
In the morning ,I somehow managed to be first in line to do the offering at Wat
Pa Sup Tawee then moved quickly by car to Ratanawan to do another alms
round offerings there, I usually drive from Bangkok myself.

As you like to stay at Luang Por Ganha's, you should phone Dao, the lady who
does the registration at this temple, it can accommodate hundreds of people.
The rooms are basic but adequate with ensuite hot shower,it can put up from
two to 4-5 people per room, there are also the toilets and showers to share
outside , it is quite safe for me as a lady to stay here and also convenient
to do meditation, morning and evening chanting as Ratanawan does not offer this
to others than monks themselves. Luang Por Ganha is very kind monk, anyone
is welcome at his temple, needless to say that both temples are under Ajahn
Chah order so they help each other in every way, foods is sent out from his
temple every day to Ratanawan since he gets a lot of support from the local.
I can give you again Dao's mobile phone no.-0066(0)82 8036087 to book for
places.
There are many hotels and bed and breakfast places but it is not as convenient as
you stay at Wat Pa Suptawee.

Dos and don'ts.

Wat Pa Suptawee schedule

4.00 -6.00 am morning chant
7.00 am Alms round
9.30 am. Having meal
3.00 pm. Helping the temple with various tasks
6.00 pm. Get together at the main hall
7.00-8.30 pm. Evening chant and meditation.
There are chanting books provided in Thai ,one may prepare their own but there
will also be other chantings which you may not familiar with then I recommend you
to do meditation during that period.

Wat Pa Ratawan.

7.00 am (or a bit later) Alms round
8.00-9.30 am. Having meal

After meal one can go up to the main hall to meet Aj. Sumedho (if he receives the
audience) or Aj. Nyanadhamo ,the abbot who is usually there receiving you.
The temple then will be closed until 4.00 pm when the monks have Pana drinks, after that
the Visitors will be received again until 5-6 pm. And Ratawan will be closed after that.

As you see the schedule,Wat Pa Suptawee has more activities but may
convenient for thai speakers .
For the offering,if you don't have transport to ride around, I think that you can
take turn to do offering from one temple to another each day,for example
today is at Ratanawan ,tomorrow will be at Wat Pa Suptawee. Foods can
be ordered from the caterers on the road to Wat Pa Suptawee who will
prepare for you to offer to both temples if you indicate them where the foods
should be sent to but the bowls of rice which are also provided will give to
you to offer by yourself, the foods costs 300 and 500 baht depending on the
amount, this is like the main course ,desserts usually are sold separately.

There is no public transport in the area(no buses, rickshaws or bicycles).
The dress code :
For 8 precepts holders. Whole white
For 5 precepts holders. Top White, bottom black
Women dress code is not too expose their body such as no shorts or sleeveless
Top.
