Ruby-eyed Buddha is called "Padamya-myet Shin" in Burmese. It is one of the nine
wonders of Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. [padamya = ruby; myet = eye;

"Padamya-myet Shin" is also called "Tawagu Wish-Fulfilling Buddha." It is called
"Tawagu" because it was built in a small "cave" in the upper terrace of the
pagoda. Women are not allowed to go up; they can worship only through
short-circuit television. Even for men, one must have a pass issued by the
Office of Pagoda Trustees. Even with the pass, one is allowed to go up only on
Saturdays and Sundays and religious holidays. It is famous as "Wish-Fulfilling"
so much so that, it is said that, in the days of Myanmar Kings, the King forbade
his sons to worship this Buddha, because they might pray for their success and
fight with each other for the throne.
There is a small enclosure built in front of the Buddha, which is enough for
about 30 people sitting crossed-legged on the floor in four rows. The front row
is reserved for the monks. As the Buddha is in a small cave, only people in the
middle can see the Buddha. When I went up there, I had to wait for a long time
to get into the middle. Some people sit there and meditate for a very long time,
or say prayers silently with the prayer beads. There is no queue system, so it
is very difficult to get to the middle to see the Buddha.
