I see he just made it to 100. His 100th birthday was just earlier this month.

Time to 'modernise' Sangha, Sulak
Social critic sees younger clergy aiding democracy
As the longest-serving supreme patriarch for 24 years, His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, who died on Thursday, certainly made a long list of memorable contributions to Thailand. According to social critic Sulak Sivaraksa, Buddhists should add to his many good deeds by reforming the Sangha Supreme Council.

The National Office of Buddhism (NOB) has nominated the abbot of Wat Pak Nam Phasi Charoen as the caretaker Supreme Patriarch, NOB director Nopparat Benjawatananun said on Monday.
Mr Nopparat said the NOB has submitted the name of Somdet Phra Maha Ratchamangalacharn, 88, who is also chairman of the monastic panel, to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for acknowledgement before his appointment is published in the Royal Gazette.
The appointment of a caretaker Supreme Patriarch follows the Sangha Act of 1992 which stipulates that when the position of the Supreme Patriarch becomes vacant, the most senior somdet phra racha khana assumes his role.
(Note: Apparently the King has to approve such an appointment.)

Btw, what does 'His Holiness' & 'Supreme Patriarch' translate into in Pali/Thai?
Or are these borrowed conventions from the Christians?

The Thai Saṅgharāja's official title is six lines long, but nothing in it would literally translate as 'Supreme Patriarch' or 'His Holiness'.

“Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara Paramanariśradharmanītibhipāla Ariyavaṃśāgatañāṇavimala Sakalamahāsaṅghapariṇāyaka Tripiṭakapariyattidhātā Visuddhacariyādhisampati Suvaḍḍhanabhidhānasaṅghavisuta Pāvacanuttambisāra Sukhumadharmavidhāna Damrong Vajirañāṇvaṃśavivaḍha Buddhapariṣadagāravasathāna Vicitrapaṭibhāṇavaḍḍhanaguṇa Vipulasilācāravatrasundara Pavaradharmapavitra Sarvagaṇiśramahāpadhānādhipatī Gāmvāsī Araṇyavāsī Somdet Phra Saṅgharāja.”
'Supreme Patriarch' is just a very free translation of 'Phra Saṅgharāja'. As for 'His Holiness', I once learned from an unreliable source that it was first coined by the United Nations, who applied it to the Pope. Later it was extended to the Dalai Lama, and later still to clerical bigwigs of all sorts.
