Do a bhikkhu can tuch and assist his mother when she became old and ill ?

As a personal note, if I am a Theravada Monk I will declare my self a just a Buddhist monk and may attend to my mother, provided that there is no one else to help my sick mother. I think those 227 rules applicable only for ordained monks.
