Bare awareness sutta

Postby Christopherxx » Sat Jun 21, 2014 12:06 am

Hey there,

Maybe tilt can chime in on this one.

I remember a few years back we where all talking about bare awareness and it's place within right concentration.

As usual we started talking about the material jhanas and the factors, etc.

But a poster mentioned a very interesting sutta that did not have the usual writing of the jhanas but talked about citta in a certain bare awareness state. Does anyone remember that sutta? I'm trying to track it down but just can't :P

I found this and this.

Either could be right.

Or wrong...

The Discourse to Mālukyaputta is one good example of the practice of bare awareness — “When you see, just know that you see it … etc.”

Hi guys,

Unfortunately we haven't got it yet.

Tilt: I have no idea unfortunately. It's been 2+ years and I wish I could say my memory was sharp like that. I remember us discussing the pali because it was citta and then had a word that started with a v

Bhikkhu Pesala: That's a very good passage but this one is about a paragraph and deals with this unique state. Doesn't follow the usual satipatthana formula nor any of the passages on jhana and absorbition states.

NOBS: I loved Thanisarro back in the day, but there is no way I am looking through all those writings for the possible quote lol!

What do we want - ?!

A time-machine!

When do we want it - ?!

That's irrelevant!

(but one would come in handy, about now!!) :jumping:

I hope you find it eventually.

And that it's worth all your trouble!
