It should be noted that the monastic vows, and Buddhist ethics in general, have a technical aspect. They help one detach from various samsaric things during meditation.
Sometimes, a detachment still leaves a subtle attachment in consciousness, in which case, one can detach with a subtler form of a vow or ethical teaching.
