A friend of mine and I were discussing the fourth Jhana and how you can ignore pleasure and pain.
He told me that he had some strategy to overcoming pain and overexcited emotions like anger and anxiety by identifying them and depersonalizing them.
Rather than saying "I'm in pain," he would think "this is pain" to make himself think that the pain didn't belong to him.
In fact, he went through a very painful Botox surgery on his leg and he didn't take anesthesia because he wanted to feel the whole process; he used this strategy and felt a significant less amount of pain.
I was wondering if anyone had any other techniques like this, or could elaborate this technique any more so that we could be able to regulate or "ignore" our emotions much better.
I don't need any placebo-killers please. Thanks.
