using metta to increase concentration. how?

My understanding of metta meditation is to arouse the feeling of loving kindness and then use the feeling as a meditation object. But won't concentration on the metta just lead to it passing away faster? And when arousing loving kindness using words such as may I be well and happy do I take these as a meditation object repeatedly bringing my attention back to them to increase concentration until metta is aroused?thanks

Yes, that's the basic idea.

It shouldn't if you keep returning to it. If you are using it as a concentration practice you just keep going back to the metta if you get distracted, as you say below.
