Well, it's good to see mandatory "donation", especially when the seat price is above average monthly wage.

Big events like that cost alot of money to stage, including flying all those monks from around the world and back again, accommodation, etc. If they let everyone in for free, they probably wouldn't even be able to hold it at all.

why is that?
not enough support.

Greetings Manasikara,

What you say is correct. However, you wonder why, in this day and age, some thought couldn't be put towards "videoconferencing" technology. As a bonus, it could be streamed to "audience" members on the web. Lugging Sangha members overseas seems a rather inefficient use of sponsor dana. Surely some local monks/abbots supplemented by video hook-ups from other Sangha members across the globe would be sufficient.

Metta,
Retro. :)
If you have asked me of the origination of unease, then I shall explain it to you in accordance with my understanding:
Whatever various forms of unease there are in the world, They originate founded in encumbering accumulation. (Pārāyanavagga)

Yes, I see your point. Technology has come a long way, maybe these things can indeed be done much more efficiently and with much less expenditure. (I just felt like I had to stop the thread from descending into too much criticism...maybe I should have just left it alone...)

Not to drag this too far off topic, but in my experience videoconferencing, though useful, misses the majority of the interaction that one gets at a "real" conference.
