It depends upon the translation / version, but there are 7 books in about 7 to 12 volumes.

I have the PTS version (English translation) and it is about 6,000 pages.

You can buy some volumes through Wisdom Books, but I doubt you would understand much of it.

Just Four of the books would cost about £150 or $250.

It would be better to start with Introductory Guides to see what its all about.

There are some Free Books in the Buddhanet Library such as Abhidhamma Studies and A Guide to the Tipitaka.

Personally, I am a fan of Nina Van Gorkom's books, many of which you can read or print for free online. There are a lot of other great resources out there too, though.
