Thai abortion scandal

This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond. -- SN I, 38.

It would be great if people were as obsessed with unaborted fetuses as they are with aborted fetuses. And if they took responsibility for their own actions, instead of appealing to ideologies and religions as a basis for being shameless or self-righteous. If this were true, there would be no such thing as abortion to even speak of.

Equanimity is not pro-choice or pro-life.

Buddhists pray in front of drinks, food and toys laid out for the spirits of the fetuses.

Abortion seems like complex issue to me sometimes, but that picture it pretty black and white.

I was very saddened when I read this on another news site. I thought I'd share it here but I really didn't know what to say about it. I'm genuinely at a loss for words, not because I do not see the ethical, social, cultural, political, religious and/or Dhammic conundrums associated with it but because it.... gosh, I don't know....

It's dukkha, the reality of samsara, writ large I suppose.

Hello all,

Have a look at this site for statistical data:

TOTAL, 1922 - 2010: 863,000,000 - reported abortions, estimated 950,000,000 total abortions

Estimated current global monthly average: 1,237,000 abortions

Chris,

No one really knows the real figures. But it's a massive problem here. (I live in Thailand) sex education is poor and parents don't want to accept their kids are having sex. One 13 year old was recently expelled from a school I know for having sex in the toliet!
My wife told me most of here friends had had abortions.

Where I live, there seems to be a taboo about getting abortions.

The result is that people who are too young to raise kids, with too little money, and a lack of emotional maturity, end up poorly raising kids.

Surely the taboo should be having unplanned pregnancies.

Although it does involve a termination of life, doesnt abortion have a part to play in population control

Not to sound to cold but the human population is already to high as it is ....
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”
