[ask] "Vihara"

Postby dragonwarrior » Sun Mar 08, 2009 4:05 pm

Hi guys! :namaste: I know this question may sound silly but I really want to know: What is the English for Vihara? I've searched for it in the internet but I've got no answer.. Is it "Buddhist monastery"? Or "Temple"? Those sound unusual for me.. Is there any word represent Vihara in English? I mean like Church or Mosque.. Lets say: My family and I go to the Buddhist monastery every week >>Correct? Well, in Indonesia, we just call it Vihara. What do you call it in your country?

Found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vihara

If I m not mistaken it is often spelt as 'Wihara' as I have seen in some Indonesian forums.
In Malaysia, it is often known as 'Dhamma Centre/Temple/'Tokong' (Malay for temple)/Wat (Thai temples)/Buddhist Lodge/Association/Monastery , depending on Tradition too. I used to visit the Sri Lankan Theravada temple known as the 'Buddhist Maha Vihara'.

it can be translated several different ways have a look for Brahma Vihara suttas and how the translators have rendered it
This offering maybe right, or wrong, but it is one, the other, both, or neither!
