Women: more gifted for spiritual life?

Post by Sacha G »

Hi
I wonder whether women might be more gifted than men for spiritual life.
I seen 3 reasons why this would be the case:
1°) They seem more attracted to anything spiritual
2°) They seem to know their inner life and their emotions better
3°) They seem to have less sexual desire (which is not a small obstacle)

Now, it's true that they seem to have stronger emotions, or to put it another way, strong kleshas. It's also a fact that they tend to suffer of depression twice as men.

What do you think?

Most of these can be explained more in cultural terms than gender terms.

I think this is something better to not form opinions about, as it tends towards discord. Please read some of the things present day Bhikkunis have said about this matter, it can be quite hurtful to even indirectly suggest which sex might be better suited, more gifted, superior, etc.
"When one thing is practiced & pursued, ignorance is abandoned, clear knowing arises, the conceit 'I am' is abandoned, latent tendencies are uprooted, fetters are abandoned. Which one thing? Mindfulness immersed in the body." -AN 1.230

Women have more depression, but men have more addiction. Both women and men have both addictions and depression. Any differences we can find (through statistics, not assumptions) are only ones of averages. There is far more overlap than difference. I did see one study that showed that women tend to pray in more of a deep meditative way than men, again on average. But there are plenty of men who meditate their butts off and plenty of women with no interest in it.

It interesting to ask the question, but I guess there's just an inherent danger in trying to reach conclusions by generalizing across broad categories such as men and women (and not to mention sexual orientation, transgender, intergender, intersex, etc.)

And evidence for such an extraordinary claim please?
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”
