Kappa-manava-puccha: Kappa's Question
translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .than.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

[Kappa:]
For one stranded in the middle of the lake,
in the flood of great danger — birth —
overwhelmed with aging & death:
Tell me the island,
dear sir, and show me the island
so that this may not happen again.

[The Buddha:]
For one stranded in the middle of the lake,
in the flood of great danger — birth —
overwhelmed with aging & death,
I will tell you the island, Kappa.

Having nothing,
clinging to no thing:
That is the island,
there is no other.
That's Unbinding, I tell you,
the total ending of aging & death.

Those knowing this, mindful,
fully unbound
in the here & now,
don't serve as Mara's servants,
don't come under Mara's sway.

Snp 5.10 Kappa-manava-puccha

Anandajoti Bhikkhu[/b]

Listen at: http://www.archive.org/details/The-Way-to-the-Beyond" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For those standing in the middle of a lake, said venerable Kappa,
when a fearful flood has arisen,
for those overcome by old age and death, speak (about) an island, dear Sir,
you must explain an island to me, so there will be no more after this.

For those standing in the middle of a lake, Kappa, said the Gracious One,
when a fearful flood has arisen,
for those overcome by old age and death, I speak (about) an island, Kappa:
having nothing, no attachment, this is the island with nothing beyond,
this is called Nibbàna, I say, the end of old age and death.

Knowing this, those who are mindful, who are emancipated in this very life,
come not under Màra's control, they are not servants to Màra.

KAPPAMANAVAPUCCHA.
(From the Sutta-Nipata ; put into verse by E. P. Buffet.)
http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/cgi/viewcon ... ontext=ocj" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Where the spreading floods are surging,"
Venerable Kappa saith,
"All the race of men submerging —
Deluge of decay and death —
Tell me. Sage, of some lone highland
Still above the rising main;
Tell me, tell me of an island.
Refuge from return of pain."

"Where the spreading floods are surging.
Kappa," saith the Blessed One,
"All the race of men submerging,
By decay and death undone,
I will name an isle of saving;
Those who find it find the best;
Nothing holding, nothing craving,
They have reached the perfect rest.

'This the Island of Nibbana;
Here decay and death expire.
Happy that serene Saniana.
Lit by Truth's illuming fire.
He hath triumphed o'er samsara
Calm and thoughtful are his days.
Broken is the power of Mara.
Unfrequented are his ways."
