Meaning of "panimassa"?

Post by nowheat »

In the SN (II 12.10) the Buddha is describing the process by which he came up with dependent origination:

"When I was yet an unenlightened Bodhisatta, I thought, "Indeed this world has fallen into distress..."

In the middle of the first of these thoughts is this bit (quoted from the DPR):
atha ca panimassa dukkhassa nissaraṇaṃ nappajānāti jarāmaraṇassa.
and I am unable to find the root word(s) "panimassa" derives from. Can any of you enlighten me on this point?

I appreciate all the shared wisdom here, as well as any help you can give.

I am no Pali expert, but it looks to me like a compound of "pana imassa"

Thanks! You've got more expertise than I have.

I've got "pana" as "and; yet; but..." (etc).

Is "imassa" some form of the emphatic "ida"?

Thanks again...

Make yourself a custom search in your browser for the PTS Dictionary.

I only know how to do that in Opera.

Very cool! One of the examples has "imassa nirodhā" as "from the ceasing of this" which makes the imassa "from" in the sense of "as a result of". That would seem to fit with the passage I'm working on.

Thank you so much!
