"Ceased aggregates of dead or alive are alike"

Post by phil »

Hi all

Found this paragraph in one of my notebooks but it's lacking a reference. Can anyone identify the sutta or commentary passage?

"Life, person, pleasure pain - just these alone join in one conscious moment that flickers(?) by. Ceased aggregates of those dead or alive are alike - gone, never to return."

Thanks.

Hi again. It occurred to me after that this might not be Theravadin. My notebooks contain some remnants from the first Buddhist book I ever came across, a Japanese/English bilingual book that is left in hotel rooms in Japan a la Gideon's and this might be one of them. The reason I say that is it reminds me of the passage in the Diamond Sutra (?) that says "this is how you should see the aggregates, as a flash of lighnting etc."

Metta,

It's from the Niddesa of the Khuddaka Nikaya, but you will probably have read it in the Visuddhimagga's chapter on the recollection of death.

Best wishes,

Hi Robert.

Right, thanks.

There is nothing unclear about the passage I'm asking about, just want to identify it so I can track down the Pali. It feels like one of those passages I would like to learn by heart for devotional purposes. (i.e gratitude to the Buddha who enlightened such truths.)

Dear Bhante

Thank you kindly. That's probably where I came across it. I don't know if one is permitted to say "you da man!" to venerable bhikkhus, so I will abstain.

It just occurred to me as I went to get Vism. that I received my first copy through the generosity of the previous poster, Robert K. Thanks again Robert. You da man too.

Hi Phil,

Here's the Pali of the three verses quoted by Buddhaghosa, with Olendzki's translation.
  • jīvitaṃ attabhāvo ca, sukhadukkhā ca kevalā.
    ekacittasamāyuttā, lahu so vattate khaṇo.

    Life, personhood, pleasure and pain
    — This is all that's bound together
    In a single mental event
    — A moment that quickly takes place.

ye niruddhā marantassa, tiṭṭhamānassa vā idha.
    sabbepi sadisā khandhā, gatā appaṭisandhikā.

What ceases for one who is dead,
Or for one who's still standing here,
Are all just the same aggregates
    — Gone, never to connect again.

    anibbattena na jāto, paccuppannena jīvati.
cittabhaṅgā mato loko, paññatti paramatthiyā ti.

    With no production there's no birth;
    With becoming present, one lives.
When grasped with the highest meaning,
The world is dead when the mind stops.
    (Mahāniddesa 42, Olendzki trans.)
