"in the commentaries"... where?

"in the commentaries"... where?

I've often heard/read that something has been said "in the commentaries". I've seen lots of talk about stories that have been elaborated or explained "in the commentaries".

Where are these commentaries? What are they called? Are any/all of them translated into English?
