Dear all,
I am working on a translation of the Dhammapada from English to Spanish. I want to understand the meanings of the text as well as possible so I want to buy an English-Pali version, with both texts in full, for easy comparison. I'm thinking of getting this version, http://www.amazon.com/Dhammapada-Introd ... 0195640802, by Radhakrishnan, but I want something accurate, so if anyone has any ideas about which one to get, please let me know.
I am using Thomas Byrom's rendering. Although the first verses in particular clash with my understanding, I am working it out with a Bhikkhu who has requested it. Much of it is very poetic.
Later on I hope to share more or ask for help from Spanish speakers in particular.
Translating the Dhammapada
Re: Translating the Dhammapada
Do you read Pali?
In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

No, but I know a lot of words.
Maybe I should get a basic grammar book, too.

How's that Italian Dhammapada I lent you working out? Happy belated Vesak!
To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

This website should be useful to you:
http://buddhism.lib.ntu.edu.tw/BDLM/en/ ... _pali3.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I only wish I had it back in 1974/75, when I translated the Dhammapada into Norwegian.

I would recommend the edition with classical commentaries:altar wrote:I am working on a translation of the Dhammapada from English to Spanish. Re: Translating the Dhammapada
How about some of the existing Spanish translations?
http://www.amazon.com/Dhammapada-Spanis ... 8476408161" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.amazon.com/Dhammapada-Spanis ... 9500710625" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.amazon.com/Dhammapada-camino ... 9681672739" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://openlibrary.org/books/OL13285799 ... Edition%29" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or did you want to make one with Spanish on one side and Pali on the other?
Either way, good luck and hope it is successful.
