Hello all,
I suspect there is a teaching in this email I received:
I just love coffee:
You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil.
In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft.
The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.
The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.
The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
Think of this: Which am I?
Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level?
How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Hi Chris
Sorry to be a pain in the behind but if you boil coffee it goes bitter.
I'm not a fan of the 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' doctrine.

Whatever brings some light to an aspect of ourselves that had until then remained in darkness, is a great teaching!
What I enjoyed in this story was whether carrot, egg, coffee or anything else for that matter, all reflects an aspect of the mind, an aspect of ourselves.
So when one is engaged in practice 24/7 one tends to see these things as I observed in my teacher at one stage. And see not only superficially but experiencially and deeply.
"The mind is the forerunner of all things." Including soft-boiled carrots and hard-boiled eggs.
Now as for coffee, I believe that falls under the Fifth Precept (unless you meant decaf).

Hello Ben and Dan,
Now is possibly not the best time to admit it, but .... I only drink decaffeinated coffee - and, believe it or not, decaffeinated tea. I came from a family which started babies on sips of tea and I drank a great deal of it all my life, until my twenties, when I developed a sensitivity to caffeine. So I bow to superior knowledge.
Besides which ... you don't have to consume these items - you just have to observe what they are like ... for instance, the coffee 'changed' the water .....

I love the alternative to that one....Ben wrote:Hi Chris

What doesn't kill you merely delays the inevitable....
I see Chris' analogy.....
But I guess the transformative process can be read in different ways....
being confronted with adversity, a 'Good' Buddhist can actually soften and become more receptive, like the carrot.
Alternatively, they could look to their strength, and grow steadfast and solid in their practice, containing both elements of skilful and unskilful, but honing them into one mass and internalising, thereby being neutral..... as in the egg....
With the coffee, we can be one thing, and influence things around us, but people will either perceive it as 'pleasant' or unpleasant.... so we have to accept we can please all of the people some of the time......
I dunno.... it's a variation......
Thanks for the stimulus Chris!!

Trying to think of what the Buddhist analogy would be... perhaps a rock? A fourth pot with a rock? Regardless of how much the water boils, the rock stays a rock. Equanimity in the face of any external circumstance?

I'll admit at this particular time in my life I've become an egg. But think I will go have a large cup of strong coffee now.

Then there's a frog. You stick him in a pot of room-temperature water and he's pretty comfortable. Slowly you turn up the heat. He doesn't notice. By the time the water boils, the frog has died.

I prefer the image of a sponge. A sponge in hot water retains its material form, while being receptive to the water that flows through it like, er...water, without grasping or blocking. When it is wet, the sponge is all wet. When it is dry, it is all dry. When it is hot, it is all hot. No preference, unlike a rock that that isn't penetrable, or a coffee bean that changes it's environment - both striking me as reactions if we understand them as metaphors for mind states.
I lean toward eggishness, but practice for sponge-ness.

I prefer the image of bacon and eggs because... yum! bacon and eggs! And coffee! And maybe a muffin too. Ok, maybe I need an analogy that isn't so breakfast related.

I like the analogy of the coffee bean. That sounds the most Buddha-like, remaining in equanimity and also changing the situation around him, by teaching the good Dhamma.Chris wrote: Or am I like the coffee bean?
