It's just an artistic decoration. That decoration, the sitting "earth witness" Buddha, the altar table (shown in photo) and another 7 ft. Buddha statue (not shown) were all bought at the same store. They come from Thailand where they were hand-carved.

I wish I could sit and meditate in front of that shrine. It's so beautiful and peaceful.
