From the Pali dictionary, I only manage to found [kumbha] as a water pot. The the rest I could not understand.
Do you have a link to an online version of that SN passage in English? That might help locate the exact meaning and context.

David,

I couldn't found an English version of Kula Sutta, but only have the Pali text.
3. Kulasuttaṃ

This is a brief explanation for the Sutta:
1. Kula Sutta.-Families consisting of many women and few men are molested by robbers; likewise a monk who has not developed emancipation of mind through love is easily molested by non-humans (S.ii.263).

Hi David, I got it from the Pali group:

(kumbhatthenaka. VA. 1291 says "having lit a light in a pot, by its light they search others' houses for booty.)
