Is bhavanga sotha same as mind stream?

What is bhavanga? Did Buddha teach it?

No. It's mentioned a couple of times in the Patthāna of the Abhidhamma Pitaka, but from there on it was commentators and meditation teachers who took the ball and ran with it.
