Iti 62. Indriyasutta.m
62. Vutta~nheta.m bhagavataa, vuttamarahataati me suta.m

"Tii.nimaani, bhikkhave, indriyaani. Katamaani tii.ni?
Ana~n~naata~n~nassaamiitindriya.m, a~n~nindriya.m, a~n~naataavindriya.m, imaani
kho, bhikkhave, tii.ni indriyaanii"ti. Etamattha.m bhagavaa avoca. Tattheta.m
iti vuccati

"Sekhassa sikkhamaanassa, ujumaggaanusaarino;
Khayasmi.m pa.thama.m ~naa.na.m, tato a~n~naa anantaraa.

"Tato a~n~naa vimuttassa, ~naa.na.m ve hoti taadino;
Akuppaa me vimuttiiti, bhavasa.myojanakkhayaa.

"Sa ve indriyasampanno, santo santipade rato;
Dhaareti antima.m deha.m, jetvaa maara.m savaahini"nti.

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavataa, iti me sutanti.

Iti 62. Indriya sutta

This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: "There
are these three faculties. Which three? The faculty of 'I am about to know what
is not yet finally known' (ana~n~naata~n~nassaamiitindriya.m), the faculty of
final knowledge (a~n~nindriya.m), the faculty of one who has finally known
(a~n~naataavindriya.m). [Note 1] These are the three faculties."

"For a learner in training along the straight path:
first, the knowledge of ending;
then, immediately, gnosis;

"then, from the ending of the fetter, becoming,
there's the knowledge, the gnosis of
one released who is Such: [Note 2]

"One consummate in these faculties, peaceful,
enjoying the peaceful state, bears his last body,
having conquered Mara along with his mount."

[Note 1]. According to the Commentary, the first of these faculties corresponds
to the first noble attainment, the path to stream-entry; the second, to the next
six attainments, ranging from the fruition of stream-entry to the path to
arahantship; and the third, to the highest attainment, the fruition of
arahantship.

[Note 2]. Such (tadi): An adjective to describe one who has attained the goal.
It indicates that the person's state is undefinable and not subject to change or
influence of any sort.

Visuddhimagga, chapter XXII, para 68

In Visuddhimagga, chapter XXII, para 68 I find the following:

68. In the case of the perversions, the perversions of perception, consciousness, and view, which find permanence in the impermanent and self in the not-self, and the perversion of view finding pleasure in pain and beauty in the foul, are eliminated by the first knowledge. The perversions of perception and consciousness finding beauty in the foul are eliminated by the third path. The perversions of perception and consciousness finding pleasure in the painful are eliminated by the fourth knowledge.

Han: I re-arrange the above facts to be in line with the ascending order of the Paths which abandoned them.

(1-a) di.t.thi-vipallaasa perceives anicca as nicca; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(1-b) di.t.thi-vipallaasa perceives anatta as atta; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(1-c) di.t.thi-vipallaasa perceives asubha as subha; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(1-d) di.t.thi-vipallaasa perceives dukkha as sukha; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(2-a) citta-vipallaasa perceives anicca as nicca; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(2-b) citta-vipallaasa perceives anatta as atta; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(2-c) citta-vipallaasa perceives asubha as subha; abandoned by Anaagaami magga.

(2-d) citta-vipallaasa perceives dukkha as sukha; abandoned by Arahatta magga.

(3-a) sa~n~naa-vipallaasa perceives anicca as nicca; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(3-b) sa~n~naa-vipallaasa perceives anatta as atta; abandoned by Sotaapatti magga.

(3-c) sa~n~naa-vipallaasa perceives asubha as subha; abandoned by Anaagaami magga.

(3-d) sa~n~naa-vipallaasa perceives dukkha as sukha; abandoned by Arahatta magga.

Han: Here, I cannot explain why the perversions of perception and consciousness finding pleasure in the painful are eliminated only by the fourth knowledge. Do you want to try, please?
