Begginer

Post by EmmaMicaela »

I am struggling to find a way. I have no known Buddist community where I live and the internet is vast and confusing. Is there a suggested reading I should start with?

I suggest checking out this list of recommended reading to get you started.

:anjali:
Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

I found the following to be very helpful when starting out...

Good Question, Good Answer
http://www.buddhanet.net/qanda.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In fact, Buddhanet also has a decent-sized Beginners Library, which is very good too.

If you have any questions about anything you come across, don't hesitate in bringing your questions back here, and we'll endeavour to help.

Metta,
Retro. :)

In the Buddha's Words by Bhikkhu Bodhi, which is really just sections of the Pali Cannon translated into english. Great place to start I think, then you can move on to what great Buddhists mind think about it.

Good book, but I think that is the older version. Here is the 4th edition:

http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/gqga-4ed.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and now Ven. Dhammika has a domain that also goes to the book:

EmmaMicaela,

For me, books alone weren't nearly as effective as books and audio. Check out this thread http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.ph ... rma#p10600 for links to popular audio download sites. I found that listening to dhamma talks related to what I was reading to be immensely helpful.
