Two things...
Firstly, does anyone know what's the source text for this?
http://reluctant-messenger.com/gospel_b ... ter_96.htmAnd Ananda, suppressing his tears, said to the Blessed One: "Who shall teach us when thou art gone?" [12]
And the Blessed One replied:
"I am not the first Buddha who came upon earth, nor shall I be the last.
In due time another Buddha will arise in the world, a Holy One, a supremely enlightened One, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe, an incomparable leader of men,
a master of angels and mortals. He will reveal to you the same eternal truths which I have taught you.
He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at the climax, and glorious at the goal, in the spirit and in the letter.
He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and pure; such as I now proclaim." [13]
Ananda said: "How shall we know him?" [14]
The Blessed One said: "He will be known as Metteyya, which means 'he whose name is kindness.'" [15]
The only Sutta text that I know which mentions on Metteyya is
here And secondly, this. What do you think of this 'selective spin master'?
Bhikkhus, if you develop and make much this one thing,
it invariably leads to weariness, cessation, appeasement, realization and extinction.
What is it? It is recollecting the Enlightened One.
If this single thing is recollected and made much,
it invariably leads to weariness, cessation, appeasement, realization and extinction.Anguttara-Nikaya: Ekanipata: Ekadhammapali: PañhamavaggaWBB TBHT HBM AC My Page

The Gospel of Buddha, by Paul Carus was written 1894. Carus drew from the various translations available to him at the time to give us a "scripture" modeled upon the Gospels. What we see in his work is an expression of his monistic philosophy. The book was a pioneering work at the time, in that is was a popular effort that brought the idea of the Buddha and his life and teachings into popular culture. It is, however, not by any stretch of the imagination a reliable source for understanding the Buddha's teachings. It can be ignored.
And secondly, this. What do you think of this 'selective spin master'?
He is worthy of being ignored.
What is the use of his knowledge
pertaining to the number of insects in the whole world?
Rather, inquire into his knowledge of
that which is to be practised by us
-- Dharmakirti
This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond.
SN I, 38.
Níl sa saol seo ach ceo
There is naught in this life but mist
Is ní bheimid beo ach seal beag gearr.
And we will not be alive but a short hard time.
