im a brand new buddhist with my prior beliefs being closely comparable to the buddha's. as far as meditating goes, im looking for direct references from any sutta or collection that provides some wisdom. i havent the knowledge or experience to pursue some sort of "divinity" so i am following some classical advice and turning to the darma. thank you for your generosity

Welcome to Dhammawheel.
Try reading some of the texts and documents here
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/index.htmlIt is hard to point you in a specific direction with the vague nature of your request, but the general index here can help with specific areas.
This offering maybe right, or wrong, but it is one, the other, both, or neither!
