Here's a weird coincidence...

Post by James the Giant »

I am currently all upset and sad that my rotten old car is dying, after costing me heaps of money in repairs.
I may as well have piled up a big pile of cash, and set fire to it all.

So anyway, I am looking online for a new car, and up comes the perfect vehicle, at a good price. Then I look again at the photos... isn't that Bodhivana monastery in the background? Yes! I realise it is owned by Ajahn Brahm's monastery, one of my favourite monasteries!
That's a car with good... um, carma. I just had to say it.
Weird coincidence. My car dies today, the monastery car is listed today, from a monastery I plan to stay at, or even perhaps ordain at.

So I'll go see it this weekend and if it looks good, I'll own an ex-monkmobile.
And if this monastery car dies, I can console myself with the thought that the purchase price was basically dana for Bodhivana Monastery.
Then,
saturated with joy,
you will put an end to suffering and stress.

Well, I went to Bodhinyana Monastery to check it out, and it's an ideal vehicle at a reasonable price, and so now I own the monastery's old car, woohoo!
Inspecting it was a little surreal... three bhikkhus trooped up the garage with me, and we all stood around and talked about it. They even got the mechanic out of retreat (a bhikkhu too!) to tell me about it.
There's probably a vinaya offense there somewhere.

They confirmed that my "dana" in return for the vehicle was not a mere purchase, but also got me merit, so that's a Two-fer!
(The nearby retreat centre manager handled all the transactions)

A vehicle that has once contained sotapannas and possibly greater... surely some of it could rub off on me?

Your personal vehicle for liberation? Pehaps you should use the car for formal sitting practice? :D

Just because it was owned be monks don't let it lead you into a belief in rites & rickshaws - Boom boom.
