good acronym for remembering right speech?

Post by mynameisadahn »

I have been working on practicing right speech, which is really hit or miss for me at times. Importantly, I find it helpful to remember some of the specific phrases used in the suttas describing what is right/wrong speech.

In the last couple of weeks, I have tried using an acronym as a memory-device when walking around during the day, to help me evaluate what I'm saying, about to say/write, or just said/wrote. It isn't great but here it is -

BAN DIAL

Beneficial
Agreeable
and Not

Divisive
Immoderate
Angry
or a Lie

That was the best I could think of. The capital letters are the basis for the acronym. Do you have a better suggestion or approach?

Basically, it is very helpful for me to remember that wrong speech is not just a lie or speaking harshly, but also immoderate (not in accord with the dhamma, or worthy of recording) or divisive 'trying to divide those here from those over there' (however the suttas word that).
