Sects & Sectarianism. The origins of Buddhist Schools

Post by Hoja »

Hi All,
I just like to share this text by Bhikkhu Sujato that I've found in the web:
http://sectsandsectarianism.googlepages.com/home" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've found it really interesting, but I would love to see your thoughts.

Interesting stuff. Not the final word, but Ven Sujato is always worth reading, even if one does not agree with him.

(Interesting headgear.)

Maybe it protection against visiting United States governors.

But to make a point relevant to the subject I would highly recommend Rupert Gethin's THE FOUNDATIONS OF BUDDHISM. It is a recent work, easily and inexpensively gotten, with and up to date in terms of historical scholarship.

I dont know if that book is accurate. On page 23 it states that there were Mahayana sutras around during the 2nd council and that Mahadeva was influenced by Vijnanavada thought which came around hundereds of years after he was dead

Unless im wrong?
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”
