10-Fold Path

A discussion on all aspects of Theravāda Buddhism

10-Fold Path

Postby Dharmajim » Thu Jul 16, 2009 3:19 pm

Good Friends:

A friend of mine came across a reference to a "10-fold" path, with two additional aspects past the 8-fold path. These two additional aspects were referred to as "transmundane". I told my friend that I believe this appears in the Numerical Discourses; but I'm not sure exactly where (The Book of Tens?). If people have Sutta references for this that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Ten factors found in Arahants:

1. Right Understanding

2. Right Thought

3. Right Speech

4. Right Action

5. Right Livelihood

6. Right Effort

7. Right Mindfulness

8. Right Concentration

9. Right Knowledge

10. Right Deliverance

(from Khuddakapatha 4)

The final two attained with enlightenment.

And see this week's Sutta Study: MN117

"Of those, right view is the forerunner. And how is right view the forerunner? In one of right view, right resolve comes into being. In one of right resolve, right speech comes into being. In one of right speech, right action... In one of right action, right livelihood... In one of right livelihood, right effort... In one of right effort, right mindfulness... In one of right mindfulness, right concentration... In one of right concentration, right knowledge... In one of right knowledge, right release comes into being. Thus the learner is endowed with eight factors, and the arahant with ten.

Rain soddens what is kept wrapped up,
But never soddens what is open;
Uncover, then, what is concealed,
Lest it be soddened by the rain.
