They are the Buddhist equivalent of Sundays, or the Sabbath in Judaism.

They occur on the full-moon, new-moon, and half moon days of each month.

Buddhists traditionally go to Buddhist temples or monasteries on such days, some observe the eight precepts and practice meditation.
