New Siladara

Post by Cittasanto »

My Friend Valery has just become Sister Kittinani (one who deserves respect through her knowledge)

Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Can anyone tell me why does some Burmese art make the Buddha looks like a butterfly on the head? Is it Mandalay?

Congratulations to her!

Is that Amaravati she is staying at?

Ayya is staying at Amaravati or Chithurst to my knowledge, she became an Anagarika just after me.

I havn't spoken to her since leaving but I will pass on your Best wishes via a friend who frequents regularly.

The "butterfly" on either side is technically known as a "flange" by the specialists. This form is typically known as the Jambupati, after the legendary king whose arrogance caused the Buddha to appear as a crowned figure. Quite possibly (i) the result of older Mahayana influence, or (ii) Pala iconography being imported by pilgrims. A theory by Dorothy Fickle was that the standard explanation of this iconography as part of the Jambupati legend was concocted to white-wash the Mahayana origins of the form.

I've seen similar Lopburi examples being catalogued as Vajrasattvas.
