Buddhaguna

Hello all,

I notice there are many Suttas chanted daily or in some occassions. From regular chanting book or Theravada Buddhist website such as accesstoinsight.com we can see lists of Sutta and Paritta for example Karaniya Metta Sutta, Jaya Mangala Gatha, Jaya Paritta, etc. But why we can't find Buddhaguna in the regular classical Theravada Paritta or Chanting book? Is this Paritta or so called mantra was composed by Ajaan Lee or what? Is this mantra for lay people and monastic member or only limited to particular people? The reason I ask this is because it seems that it is not so widespread and known/ chanted on a regular basis in most the Theravada temple as far as I know. Any thought would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok so I asked a monk from Burma, his short answer is I encourage you to stick to the original teaching of the Buddha.
This divine mantra or any other paritta could be composed by a certain monk, please take a look the 11 Paritta. That is pretty much what he said. I don't know what most people think particularly members of Dhammawheel. We can see that the 'Divine Mantra' is actually salutation of Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, taking refuge in Triple Gem and the chanting of the 6 elements.

As far as I know, even though the 11 paritta also composed by the monk, the difference maybe it was composed much more earlier? Please correct me if I'm wrong. If that is correct then what is the different between this Paritta and that Paritta? Thanks.

Uh, the parittas are all from the Sutta pitaka, they were not made up by 'some monk'.
"For a disciple who has conviction in the Teacher's message & lives to penetrate it, what accords with the Dhamma is this:
'The Blessed One is the Teacher, I am a disciple. He is the one who knows, not I." - MN. 70 Kitagiri Sutta

You can find the Buddhaguṇa in the Dhajjaga Sutta (as well as the Dhammaguṇa, and Saṅghaguṇa).

What I meant was not Buddhanussati, quoting from the link above:

Worthy is the Rightly Self-awakened One,

the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples who have practiced straightforwardly,

Ñāya-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples who have practiced methodically,

Sāmīci-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples who have practiced masterfully,

Yadidaṃ cattāri purisa-yugāni aṭṭha purisa-puggalā:
i.e., the four pairs — the eight types — of Noble Ones:

Esa bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho —
That is the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples —

Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjali-karaṇīyo,
worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect,

Anuttaraṃ puññakkhettaṃ lokassāti.
the incomparable field of merit for the world.

(Think of Ven. Moggallana, his supernormal powers & his compassion.)

Dhātu-parisuddhānubhāvena, sabba-dukkhā sabba-bhayā sabba-rogā vimuccanti.
Through the power of the purity of the element, they are released from all pain, all danger, all disease.

Iti uddham-adho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi sabbattatāya sabbāvantaṃ lokaṃ, mettā karuṇā muditā upekkhā sahagatena cetasā, catuddisaṃ pharitvā viharati,
When one dwells spreading an awareness imbued with good will, compassion, appreciation, & equanimity in this way to the four directions, above, below, around, in every way throughout the entire cosmos,

Sukhaṃ supati sukhaṃ paṭibujjhati, na pāpakaṃ supinaṃ passati,
one sleeps with ease, wakes with ease, dreams no evil dreams.

Manussānaṃ piyo hoti, amanussānaṃ piyo hoti, devatā rakkhanti,

One is dear to human beings, dear to non-human beings, guarded by divine beings, and untouched by fire, poison, or weapons.

Asammuḷho kālaṃ karoti,

What do you call this Paritta? We don't normally find this Paritta in the regular chanting book, do we?

Somdej Toh said that “Whoever recites Phra Katha Jinnabanchon everynight, they may not fall down to Abaiyaphoom (One place of Hell, Buddhaphoom is opposite place where Arahants go). Reciting any other Katha for 100 years, will not be as good as reciting Phra Katha Jinnabanchon. This katha, when recited with good concentration will;
a. Protects from all harmful cause.
b. Improves their lives.
c. Any place they go, they will gain the friendship of people they meet.
d. It is believed that it can also make Holy Water to cure illnesses.
e. Or any purpose their mind focuses to.

Due to the fact it is a powerful Katha. It is the best advise for practitioners of this Katha to keep their precepts well. Many Luang Poh and Ajahns have advised as such especially the precept of sexual misconduct. No prostitution and sexual misconduct with wives of others.

Misuse of this Katha will bring disastrous results upon the user!
