hello,
i made it out of berkeley and into thailand.
what are some good retreats to do here? any less obvious?
i am just studying and living on cheap guesthouses in paradise.
i will probably meditate on my own, and go to a monastery where the teacher only really speaks thai, but i wouldn't mind a teacher that knows how to instruct jhana.

Just keep breathing in and out like this. Don't be interested in anything else. It doesn't matter even if someone is standing on their head with their ass in the air. Don't pay it any attention. Just stay with the in-breath and the out-breath. Concentrate your awareness on the breath. Just keep doing it. http://www.ajahnchah.org/book/Just_Do_It_1_2.php

Re: in chiang mai
Never was in thailand just the name of the province pop out - so i feel the need to say there is Chom Tong Insight Meditation Center which i follow the teachings there so if i was in thailand thats where i would go - its in the tradition of Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw's
http://www.dharmaoverground.org/web/gue ... n%20Center
dont know what style you meditate in right now - i think the best technique to do is the one that you have a teacher close to you - even if its 4 hours drive so if you already meditate in a different way than i believe its not good to change to a different technique but if your not sure and you just started meditating and your going to stay in thailand for a long time than its worth a try
what technique do you use and how much time do you plan to stay in thailand ?

what techniques are being thought next to your home ? did you go on a retreat before ?
Re: in chiang mai
yeah i did retreats or practice in all those traditions i mentioned. i am in chiang mai, so the place you mention is pretty close. i like that the retreat is 21 days. i have no fixed city, but i'm finishing up at berkeley in three months, so after SE asia i'll be there a while.

Wat Umong is worth a visit or to stay for a short retreat and it's not far from the city.
Pronouns (no self / not self)
“Peace is within oneself to be found in the same place as agitation and suffering. It is not found in a forest or on a hilltop, nor is it given by a teacher. Where you experience suffering, you can also find freedom from suffering. Trying to run away from suffering is actually to run toward it.”
― Ajahn Chah

There's Wat Rampoeng ,offering intensive 26 day courses and Wat Umong, which follows the teachings of the late Ajahn Buddhadasa.

Re: in chiang mai
I think its best to choose one - dont want to be annoying i just dont want to be the reason you add another meditation tradition to the list so i guess its better for you to look for a thai forest tradition center
edit : well im not really sure myself actually maybe its good to try lots of stuff as long as you choose one at the end
