Dana of software to the Buddhist community

Postby Ben » Sun Jul 07, 2013 9:16 am

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

Mudita!

This will be very handy.

Hi Ben,

I certainly appreciate the work of the Document Foundation and I've used Libre Office for quite a while (and OpenOffice before that). However, I'm little confused by the message, since Libre Office is already provided free to anyone:

Hi Mike

I am merely passing on the message that I received in my email. I am not familiar with the package and was not aware that it was already offered as freeware.
kind regards,

Ben

I guess the point is that if one wants an Office suite (Wordprocessor, Spreadsheet, Presentation, ...) one can use Libre Office (or one of the other Open Office descendents) freely, rather than buying or pirating Microsoft's product.

Libre Office's interface is quite similar to the Microsoft Office 2003 version, and if you stick to saving as .doc, .xls, .ppt format (rather than the .docx, etc format introduced in the MS 2007 version) then exchanging documents usually works OK. If I didn't have to deal with documents and spreadsheets created with recent versions of MS Office (which don't translate well) as part of my job, I would be happy to stick with Libre Office.
