The Ancestor Of All Life On Earth...

Post by Kusala »

May Have Been A Gigantic Planetary Super-Organism http://www.altering-perspectives.com/20 ... h-may.html
"He, the Blessed One, is indeed the Noble Lord, the Perfectly Enlightened One;
He is impeccable in conduct and understanding, the Serene One, the Knower of the Worlds;
He trains perfectly those who wish to be trained; he is Teacher of gods and men; he is Awake and Holy. "

--------------------------------------------
"The Dhamma is well-expounded by the Blessed One,
Apparent here and now, timeless, encouraging investigation,
Leading to liberation, to be experienced individually by the wise. "

That's a seriously :alien: site, Kusala (look at http://www.altering-perspectives.com/20 ... -nasa.html, for instance) but the particular item you link to may be okay as far as it goes ... which isn't as far as it tries to look like it goes. How about links to the original research?

The science does not warrant the :alien: -claim "planet-spanning organism" in any way.
  • "And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of the four establishments of mindfulness. It is in such a way that by protecting oneself one protects others.

    "And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting others one protects oneself? By patience, harmlessness, goodwill, and sympathy. It is in such a way that by protecting others one protects oneself.

That's better!
But, having skimmed through it, I agree with what I think Dave is saying: the science does not identify a "Gigantic Planetary Super-Organism" at all, but a very simple microscopic blob. It may well have been surrounded by lots of similar blobs but they certainly did not constitute one organism, super- or not, in any meaningful way.
Sigh. It was a sorta nice idea ... my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great - etc - grand-dad could have been something that would have made the giant squid http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... _Squid.png look like a dumb tadpole.
