Goenka died today

Postby convivium » Mon Sep 30, 2013 12:00 am

We just received the news that our dear Dhamma father, Goenkaji, passed away peacefully at the ripe age of 90 at his residence in Mumbai on Sunday, 29th September, 2013 at 10:40pm, Indian Time.

May he be happy, peaceful & liberated.

Just keep breathing in and out like this. Don't be interested in anything else. It doesn't matter even if someone is standing on their head with their ass in the air. Don't pay it any attention. Just stay with the in-breath and the out-breath. Concentrate your awareness on the breath. Just keep doing it. http://www.ajahnchah.org/book/Just_Do_It_1_2.php

I was not a follower of the Goenka style of practice, but I hope all of those who look up to him and practice in the style of Goenka's teachings are happy and well.

Although not a follower, he offered me the opportunity to have the most profound experience in my life. Forever grateful.
And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

Oh NO! A true legend of the Dhamma. If there were a Mount Rushmore of modern Buddhism, he would have to be on it.

Having arisen they come to an end.

My beloved Dhamma "father", SN Goenka.
My debt of gratitude to him is beyond measure.
To him I dedicate my merits.

I tried adding this news to Wikipedia Main page, but it doesn't allow edits to the Main page, so made an entry under recent deaths:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2013#29

S. N. Goenka, 89, Burmese-born Indian Vipassana Teacher whose courses are attended by over 100,000 each year.[5]

He was certainly famous and notable, so hopefully other Wiki editors won't delete this.

I am grateful for a teaching that changed my life, the well-organized retreats in which the teaching was presented, and a venue for Dhamma service that has had an amazing impact on my happiness. May all beings share in his merits.
"As I am, so are others;
as others are, so am I."
Having thus identified self and others,
harm no one nor have them harmed.

David, i know that this may not be the right time or place to ask but ...
Could we have a subforum or a sticky to bring together some of the legacy that he has left?

I have become an orphan.

Some years ago I had an opportunity to attend a public gathering where Goenkaji would address the assembled. Sadly I was in that low phase of avoiding Vipassana and meditation altogether (because I was not getting results to my unreasonable expectations) and chose not attend. Now I will forever regret it.

We are forever grateful . A compassion which was so boundless , that no language will have any words to describe its strength of purity and sincerity of purpose.

Both our children and countless many carried his blessings while in the womb.

Once again i reaffirm the resolve that i had made to our Dhamma Father , that may i never commit the monumental sin of creating a sect out of Dhamma in any of my remainders .

Dhamma so pure , that it has nothing to add , nor nothing to subtract from.

Aniica vata sankhara , upadavya-dhammino .
Upajitva nirujanthi , tesam vupsamo sukho.

May we all be happy and well , and may all the worlds join together in expressing their great great gratitude.

Homage to the Buddha
Thus indeed, is that Blessed One: He is the Holy One, fully enlightened, endowed with clear vision and virtuous conduct, sublime, the Knower of the worlds, the incomparable leader of men to be tamed, the teacher of gods and men, enlightened and blessed.

Homage to the Teachings
The Dhamma of the Blessed One is perfectly expounded; to be seen here and now; not delayed in
time; inviting one to come and see; onward leading (to Nibbana); to be known by the wise, each for himself.
