Archive for the zazen vs vipassana, shakantaza vs jhana, etc

An idea spawned by a recent grumble against recurrence of Mahayana threads and posts was to create an archive of previous comparative threads and other materials people can be pointed towards rather than clogging up the board and causing disruption. If you see others, perhaps they can be added here.

Here are some threads on comparison between Theravada and Zen meditation:

Thank you for this Dan!

The heart of the path is SO simple. No need for long explanations. Give up clinging to love and hate, just rest with things as they are. That is all I do in my own practice. Do not try to become anything. Do not make yourself into anything. Do not be a meditator. Do not become enlightened. When you sit, let it be. When you walk, let it be. Grasp at nothing. Resist nothing. Of course, there are dozens of meditation techniques to develop samadhi and many kinds of vipassana. But it all comes back to this - just let it all be. Step over here where it is cool, out of the battle. - Ajahn Chah

Thanks Dan, and thanks for your very useful input in some of those threads. As some of those discussions make clear, it is not really A versus B, but different ways of interpreting or implementing Dhamma/Dharma.

Here is a helpful summary posted some time ago by Gregory Wonderwheel on Zen Forum International:

Vipassana & shikantaza: does it matter?
Fingers walk the darkness down
Mind is on the midnight
Gather up the gold you've found
You fool, it's only moonlight.
If you try to take it home
Your hands will turn to butter
You better leave this dream alone
Try to find another. – Townes Van Zandt ‘Lungs’
