The inevitable Fact ...

Death Contemplation is Daily Routine!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Contemplation on death, Bhikkhus & friends, when developed & frequently
practised, brings high reward and blessing, has the Deathless Dimension
itself as goal & sweet fruit. And how so? Bhikkhus & friends, at every dawn
and dusk the wise Bhikkhu thinks to himself: Truly, there are many, many
possibilities of dying: a snake may bite me, or a scorpion or centipede may
sting me, and thereby I may lose my life. This would be an obstruction!
Or I may stumble and fall down; or become seriously sick, or bad men or
evil spirits may attack me, and thereby I may die. That would indeed be
for me an obstruction blocking Nibbana!
Here, a Bhikkhu therefore considers by intelligent reflection: Are there
still found in me unsubdued evil and disadvantageous mental states, that if
I should die today or tonight, would lead me to a bad, painful, low, ugly,
poor or unsuccessful next life?
Now, if he by such reflection realize that there are indeed still unsubdued
evil and disadvantageous mental states found in him, then he should use his
outmost determination, energetic effort, endurance, steady awareness,
and clear comprehension in order to subdue these evil & disadvantageous
mental states! If, however, the Bhikkhu by reflection notices that there
are not anymore found in him any evil & disadvantageous mental states,
then such Bhikkhu can dwell in pure blissful serene joy, training himself in
all advantageous things both by day and by night! Source: AN 8:74

Today is Vap Poya Observance Day!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

How to be a Real Buddhist through Observance?

Vap Poya day is the full-moon of October. This holy day celebrates the
end of the Bhikkhu's three months rains retreat and marks the Kathina
month of robes , where lay people donate a set of robes to the Sangha.
This also celebrates the day that Buddha began to teach the Abhidhamma!

Image
The Buddha descending from the Tavatimsa Level after having spent a rains
retreat there explaining the Abhidhamma to the assembled devas during
a single three months long speech! His biological mother Mahamaya, who
died 7 days after his birth, and was reborn in Tusita as a devata, was present.
He is followed down by the deva rulers Sakka and Maha-Brahma.

More about the Kathina Ceremony:

The Kathina Ceremony of giving robes to the Maha-Sangha and receive blessing merit thereby!

On such Full-Moon Uposatha Poya Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges and undertakes the
Five Precepts like this: Newly bathed, shaved, white-clothed, with clean
bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue, and bows first
three times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees & head touch the floor.
Then, with joined palms at the heart, one recites these memorized lines
in a loud, calm & steady voice:

As long as this life lasts:
I hereby take refuge in the Buddha.
I hereby take refuge in the Dhamma.
I hereby take refuge in the Sangha.
I hereby seek shelter in the Buddha for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Dhamma for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Sangha for the 2nd time.
I hereby request protection from the Buddha for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Dhamma for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Sangha for the 3rd time.

I will hereby respect these Three Jewels the rest of my life!

I accept to respect & undertake these 5 training rules:
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Killing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Stealing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Sexual Abuse.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Dishonesty.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Alcohol & Drugs.

As long as this life lasts, I am thus protected by these 5 precepts...

Then, one keeps and protects these sacred vows better than one's
own eyes & children!, since they protect you & all other beings much
better than any army! They are the highest offer one can give in & to
this world! So is the start towards Nibbana: the Deathless Element!
This is the Noble Way to Peace, to Freedom, to Ease, to Happiness,
initiated by Morality, developed further by Dhamma-Study and
fulfilled by training of Meditation...

Today indeed is Pooya or Uposatha or observance day, where any lay
Buddhist normally keeps even the Eight Precepts from sunrise until the
next dawn... If any wish an official recognition by the Bhikkhu-Sangha,
they may simply forward the lines starting with "I hereby ..." signed with
name, date, town & country to me or join here. A public list of this new
quite rapidly growing global Saddhamma-Sangha is set up here!

The 4 Clingings!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

There are four kinds of Mental Clinging:

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:

Bhikkhus: There are these four kinds of Clinging. What four?
1: Clinging to Sense-Pleasures...
2: Clinging to Various Views...
3: Clinging to Rituals and Superstition…
4: Clinging to an an Ego-Concept…

These are the four kinds of Clinging!
This Noble 8-fold Way is to be developed for the direct experience of the
four kinds of clinging, for the full understanding of these clingings,
for their complete elimination, and for their final overcoming, abandoning
and leaving all behind…
The Noble 8-fold Way is developed for the ceasing of all clinging!

Image

Comments:
1: The 1st kind of clinging to sights, sounds, smells, flavours, touches, and
thoughts is fairly obvious, yet still long habituated and thus tenacious...
2: Clinging is to Views is thinking: Doing good deeds are completely useless.
Doing evil have no consequences! No action has any effect on my future!
3: Clinging to rituals & superstition is like thinking that fire, bathing, and
various empty rituals, like wearing funny hats & praying, can purify mind…
3: Clinging to an Ego-concept, personality-belief, & a 'self' is the assuming
an unchanging internal entity ‘I-Me', which however is non-existent...
The proximate cause of all clinging is Craving, which have to be left!
This is the 2nd Noble Truth! Clinging means: adherence, attachment, grip,
clasping, clutching, grasping, stubbornly and tenaciously sticking to.
The word pali word the Buddha used ‘Upadana’ literally means ‘taking up’
indicating that as soon as one takes up the object, then clinging occurs!

ImageImage

Sariputta once said:
When, friends, a Noble Disciple understands clinging, the cause of clinging,
the ceasing of clinging, and the way leading to the ceasing of clinging, in
that way he is one of right view, whose view is straight, who has perfect
confidence in the Dhamma, and has arrived at this true Dhamma...
And what is clinging, what is the cause of clinging, what is the ceasing of
clinging, what is the way to the cease clinging?
Friends: There are these 4 kinds of clinging: clinging to sense-pleasures,
clinging to views, clinging to rituals & superstition, and the subtle clinging
to the ego-concept of an assumed inner self. With the arising of craving,
clinging also arises. With the ceasing of craving, clinging thus ceases too!
The way leading to the ceasing of clinging is just this Noble 8-fold Way:
Right View, Right, Motivation, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood,
Right Effort, Right Awareness, and Right Concentration…

Gradually Deeper Degree of Ceasing:

In the 1st meditative jhana absorption, all sense-desire ceases...
In the 2nd meditative jhana absorption, conceptual thinking ceases.
In the 3rd meditative jhana absorption, enraptured Joy ceases.
In the 4th meditative jhana absorption, breathing in and out ceases.
In the sphere of infinite space, experience of form & sense reaction ceases.
In the sphere of infinite consciousness, experience of infinite space ceases.
In the sphere of nothingness, experience of infinite consciousness ceases.
In the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, nothingness ceases...
When attaining complete mental cessation, all perception and sensation ceases.
These 9 sublime states have been perfectly formulated by the blessed Buddha,
who knew and saw directly. therefore should we recite them together for the
future advantage, welfare and happiness for both human beings and devas...

Mutual Joy Shines :-)

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

How to train Rejoicing Joy in others Success?

Image

When sitting alone, in silence, each early morning, with closed eyes one wishes:
May I radiate and meet only never-ending and mutually rejoicing joy!
May I & all the various beings on the 31 levels of existence develop and find
only celebration and elation in a never-ending mutually rejoicing joy!
May I & all beings on the sense-desire, fine-material, and the formless plane
develop and encounter this generous, infinite and mutually rejoicing joy!
May I & all beings in the front, to the right, the back, the left, and below as
above, develop and experience openhearted, sharing, & mutually rejoicing joy!
May I and all beings within this city, country, planet and universe always:
Be fully aware and deeply mindful of this content and mutually rejoicing joy!
Examine all details & aspects of this satisfied and mutually rejoicing joy!
Put enthusiastic effort in our praxis of this devoted mutually rejoicing joy!
Enjoy enraptured jubilant gladness in this exulting mutually rejoicing joy!
Be silenced by the tranquillity of quiet and all smiling mutually rejoicing joy!
Be concentrated & absorbed into one-pointedness by genuine rejoicing joy!
Dwell in an imperturbable equanimity of pure and mutually rejoicing joy...
Yeah! May it be even so, since mutual joy causes the jewel of contentment!

ImageImage

Comment: Mutual Joy is the 3rd infinite mental state (Appamañña):
This gradually reduces all envy, jealousy, possessiveness, stinginess, avarice
miserliness, green covetousness and unhappiness related with all these states.
The cause of Mutual Joy in rejoicing in your child's or boon companion's success.
This same joy can then be beamed towards all liked, neutral and hostile beings.
Mutual Joy is then the proximate cause of satisfied and fulfilled Contentment...
Lack of mutual joy is thus the proximate cause of dissatisfied discontentment...
Joined with the 7 links to Awakening it will later cause a formless jhana...
Be happy at all and especially other being's success! Then calm comfort grows!

Four, but still One!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

The 4 Truths perform 4 Functions in a single Moment!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said this:
Bhikkhus, any one who sees the 1st Truth on Suffering, sees also The Cause of Suffering,
sees also the 3rd Truth on The End of Suffering, sees also The Way to End all Suffering..
Any one who sees the 2nd Truth on The Cause of Suffering, sees also Suffering, Ending,
& 4th Truth on The Way. And any one who sees The End, sees also Pain, Cause, & The Way.
Consequently any one who sees The Noble Way to End all Pain, sees also this as Suffering,
sees also That Craving Causes the Suffering, sees also That No Craving Ends all Suffering!

Comments on Coming to the 4 Breakthrough moments:
Breakthrough to the Truths thus performs 4 functions at a single moment! 4 of these fine
breakthroughs occur at each path-entry-moment to Nobility... The effect is each time an
even deeper irreversible mental purification! When these 4 Truths are flashing forth fully
this transforms one's life into Nibbana as the single object pointed to as possible escape!
There is only this single unique Exit out of this burning cinema of attaching appearances...

Abysmal is Intention!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

How does one Tumble Down the Abyss?

Image

Once, a certain not very well-known Bhikkhu asked the Blessed Buddha:
Venerable Sir: What is the steepest & most frightening abyss for downfall?
The Blessed Gotama Buddha then pointed out:
Bhikkhu: All those ascetics & priests, who do not understand as it really is:
This is Suffering; Craving Causes Suffering; No Craving Ends Suffering;
This Noble 8-fold Way leads to the End of Suffering, they delight in forming
intentions, that lead to rebirth, aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief
and despair. Delighting in forming such intentions, they generate & accumulate
intentional mental constructions, that indeed induce and set off rebirth, aging,
death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair. All unaware of having thus
produced their own painful future, they tumble ever again down this abyss of
rebirth, aging, and death, tumble down the abyss of sorrow, lamentation, pain,
grief, and they tumble down the abyss of utter despair. They are therefore
not freed from this rebirth, aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and
not freed from despair... I tell you: They are not freed from all this Suffering!
However those ascetics and recluses who do understand the 4 Noble Truths
they do not delight in forming new intentions, and therefore do they neither
generate, nor accumulate intentional mental constructions inducing rebirth,
aging, death, sorrow, pain, grief and despair. They are thus freed from rebirth!
I tell you: They are thereby freed from all possible future Suffering whatsoever!

Concise Comment:
Any intention that accumulates the kammic cause of future rebirth, thereby also
inherently includes the cause of future ageing, decay, mortality & thus Suffering!

Breakthrough to the Truths eliminates a Mountain of Suffering!

Image

The Blessed Gotama Buddha once explained:
Bhikkhus & friends, please see this little dust that I have taken up upon the
nail of my little-finger, what do you think is most: This tiny amount of dust
or this great planet Earth? The Bhikkhus then responded:
Venerable Sir, this great planet Earth is much more, incomparable more...
The minute speck of dust is trifling, microscopic, negligible in comparison.
The Blessed Gotama Buddha then pointed out:
Similarly and exactly so too, is that amount of samsaric Suffering, which
remains for a Noble Disciple trifling, microscopic, negligible in comparison.
For such Noble One, who is consummated in view, who has broken through
to understanding the 4 Noble Truths, the accumulated mass of Suffering,
that has been shattered and irreversibly eliminated is incomparable more...
The Suffering that still remains to be experienced for such a Noble person,
is trifling, microscopic, & negligible in comparison, since there remains only
a maximum of 7 more lives for such a Noble One, as he is one who actually
understands all this, as it really, truly, essentially and assuredly indeed is:
All this is Suffering;
Craving is the Cause of Suffering;
No Craving is the End of Suffering;
The Noble 8-fold Way Ends all Suffering
,

Therefore, Bhikkhus & friends, exertion should be made Now to understand:
All This is Suffering; This Greedy Craving is the sole Cause of all Suffering;
No Craving is the End of Suffering; The Noble 8-fold Way Ends all Suffering,
Therefore should an effort to fathom these 4 Noble Truths be made NOW!

Glad is Giving :-)

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

How to Give with only Good & Joyous Result :-)

There might be the case, where one gives wealth, but without joy!
Then, the later result is, that one gets wealth, but without any joy!

Image

Illustration:
A multi-billionaire at Buddha's time was known as neither enjoying
himself, nor sharing any of his wealth. He lived alone in an old house,
which were falling apart, wore rag clothes, ate only broken rice and
drove a ramshackle ox-cart. When he died, then it took 2 weeks to
move his gold & silver to the kings treasury...
This king then approached and asked the Blessed Gotama Buddha:
How come this man neither ever enjoyed, nor shared out of his wealth?
The Buddha then reviewed his case and explained that 8 generations
back this man had given a single meal to a Solitary Pacceka-Buddha!
Yet after he had given, he felt no joy from it and even regretted that
he did it. For 7 consecutive lives he was reborn as multi-billionaire,
but without ever being able to enjoy any of it. Having now used up
his accumulated merit, without ever doing any refilling good action,
he had now, at the break-up of his body, re-arised in a bad state...
Apparently, he had never asked anybody about cause and effect!

Image

The Opposite Case:
When old, the Noble Disciple recollects his own generosity thus:
"I am truly Blessed, highly fortunate am I who joyous, among beings
defiled with the mental stain of stinginess, live with a mind freed from
stinginess, liberal, open-handed, rejoicing in giving, ready to give anything
asked for, glad to give and happy to share with others. Such Noble One
not only later gets much wealth, but also enjoys it. Why so?
Not only does he give, but he also enjoys it both be and aft
er the giving!

Image
Most Gods actually became Divine Beings as a result of Giving!

In what sense is calm a power? In the 1st jhana this mental calm does not
waver even when attacked by the 5 mental hindrances, thus is calm a power!
In the 2nd jhana this serenity does not flicker even by thoughts or thinking,
thus is calm a power... In the subtle mental sphere of neither perception nor
non-perception, this tranquil composure does not hesitate being faced with
void empty nothingness, thus is calm a power! Such silenced imperturbability
can neither waver, nor vacillate, nor hesitate in any fluctuating indecisiveness
despite being provoked by agitation, confusion, distraction or perturbation,
therefore is calmness a power. Such is the power of calm: The calm power!
Vism 703

Exquisite is Equanimity!

How to train and purify Imperturbable Equanimity!

Image

Sitting alone, in silence, each early morning, with closed eyes one wishes:
May I radiate and meet only calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all the various beings on the 31 levels of existence develop and find
only the composure and poise of calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings on the sense-desire, fine-material, and the formless plane
develop and encounter this serene, calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in the front, to the right, the back, the left and below as
above develop and experience cool, calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country, and universe always be fully aware
and deeply mindful of this steady, calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country, and universe examine all details and
subtle aspects of this unstirred, placid, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country, and universe put enthusiastic effort
into their training of this solid, calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country and universe find enraptured joy and
jubilant gladness in this unmovable, calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country, and universe cultivate the tranquillity
of quiet, silent, stilled, and all smiling calm, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country and universe attain concentrated and
absorbed one-pointedness by stoic, deep, imperturbable, and even equanimity!
May I and all beings in this city, country, and universe dwell in undisturbable
and imperturbable equanimity of unexcitable and unreactive detachment...
Yeah! Print this out, dwell in each state until pure, use ~ 25-45 minutes.

Comment: Imperturbable Equanimity is the 4th infinite state (Appamañña):
This gradually reduces all desire, attraction, drift, tendency, bias, preference,
favouritism, one-sided partiality and unhappiness related with all these states.
Equanimity is the proximate cause of any knowing and seeing leading to Wisdom...
Equanimity is an extremely subtle form of solid, calm and peaceful Happiness...
Equanimity purifies all other advantageous states and brings them to Perfection...
Equanimity is unresponsive indifference, unstirred, unaffected, and untroubled!!!
There is Equanimity both regarding all live beings and all dead things!
There is Equanimity both regarding all internal and all external states!
There is Equanimity both regarding all past, all present and all future events!
There is Equanimity both regarding all what is mental and all which is physical!
There is Equanimity both regarding all what is material and all which is immaterial!
There is Equanimity both regarding all formed and all formless phenomena!
Cultivating such six-fold equanimity brings this supreme state to completion.

Equanimity gives delicate Peace & Happiness!

Image

Equanimity (Upekkha) entails a composed equipoise of solid mental balance!
It is Tatra-majjhattata = keeping to the moderate middle of all phenomena.
Equanimity balances consciousness so it prevents both all excessiveness and
any deficiency. In equanimity mind is neither attracted by attractive things,
nor repelled by repulsive things. The cause of equanimity is seeing the law of
kamma: All beings are born and created by their kamma, they are owners of
their kamma, inherit their kamma, whatever they do, whether good or bad,
the effects of that will be theirs only, following them like a shadow of past!
The effect of Equanimity is threefold:
Exquisite, relaxed & subtle peace felt as calm happiness is instantly gained.
Equanimity purifies and completes all the 7 crucial Links to Awakening...
Equanimity is the proximate cause of knowledge and vision (ñanadassana)!

What is True Wisdom?

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

When has one penetrated & arrived at True Wisdom?

Image

Once, a certain not very well-known Bhikkhu asked the Blessed Buddha:
Venerable Sir: True Wisdom is it said. What is really True Wisdom?
Venerable Sir: When has one arrived at such true Wisdom?
The Blessed Gotama Buddha then pointed out:
Understanding and knowing that: This is Suffering is True Wisdom;
Understanding that: Craving is the Cause of Suffering is True Wisdom;
Understanding that: No Craving is the End of Suffering is True Wisdom;
Understanding that: The Noble 8-fold Way ends Suffering is True Wisdom!
All this profound understanding and direct knowledge of the absolute is
True Wisdom, and it is by that very penetrating comprehension, that glimpse
of a far-reaching ultimate reality, that one has arrived at this true Wisdom!
Therefore, Bhikkhu, an effort should be made much now of to understand:
This is Suffering; an effort should be made much of now to comprehend:
This is the Cause of Suffering; an effort should be made now so to realize:
This is the End of Suffering; An effort should be made now to penetrate,
recognize, and develop, This is the Way leading to the End of Suffering..
